Cashel Traveller Education Initiative

About the Initiative

The Cashel Traveller Education Initiative is a collaborative project, dedicated to improving educational opportunities and outcomes for Traveller children and young people in Cashel.

The initiative aims to address barriers to educational participation, promote school attendance and retention, and support Traveller children and young people throughout their educational journey, from early childhood education to secondary school and further training opportunities.

Through a community-based and culturally responsive approach, the project works closely with Traveller families, schools, youth services and other local organisations to create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.

What We Do

The initiative provides and coordinates a range of educational supports designed to respond to the needs of Traveller children, young people and their families.

Our work includes:

  • Educational Support: Coordinating homework clubs, learning activities and culturally relevant educational programmes to strengthen literacy, confidence and engagement with education.

  • Early Childhood Education: Supporting Traveller families to access preschool and early childhood education opportunities.

  • School Attendance and Retention: Working with children, young people, families and schools to encourage regular attendance, support progression to secondary education and reduce early school leaving.

  • Access to Additional Supports: Helping families access appropriate educational and psychological assessments where needed.

  • Training and Progression: Supporting pathways to further education, vocational training and employment opportunities through collaboration with relevant services.

  • Community Engagement: Promoting meaningful participation by Traveller families and young people in decisions affecting their education and community.

Working Together for Educational Inclusion

Partnership and collaboration are central to the Cashel Traveller Education Initiative.

Youth Work Ireland Tipperary works alongside local primary and secondary schools, Tipperary Rural Traveller Project and other community and statutory organisations to coordinate services, share resources and strengthen educational opportunities.

The initiative also supports educators and service providers in developing greater cultural awareness and understanding of the experiences and educational needs of the Traveller community.

By strengthening relationships between families, schools and community organisations, the project seeks to create sustainable improvements in educational participation, inclusion and progression.
